The goal is too far problem
It's a common issue that people face when trying to achieve their goals - the moment the goal seems too far away, they tend to give up. This is a problem that is prevalent in the gym business as well, where people start working out enthusiastically, but eventually fall off the wagon, never to be seen again.
As someone who has dealt with this issue personally, I can recall my own experience of starting to work out during my military deployment, only to stop as soon as I was back on base. Looking back now, I think I understand that I wasn't truly addicted to it at the time. And "I didn't put enough stock into looking good." It was true, I had been so focused on my work and other responsibilities that I had neglected my own appearance.
This realization made me curious about the research on dopamine, the chemical that tends to regulate the brain's reward and pleasure centers. How does dopamine factor into our motivation to achieve our goals? Is it possible to manipulate dopamine levels to help us stay on track? These are the questions that have been on my mind lately.
